A Bus and a Budget: Equitable Education in Juvenile Justice

A Listening Guide to the Roadmap for Change Podcast, Episode 11

The whole juvenile justice system needs to prioritize providing education funds, resources, and committed teachers and staff who believe in their students.

Welcome to the Episode 11 Listening Guide!

In this episode of the Roadmap for Change podcast, education professionals in the juvenile justice system share how, in order to help justice-involved youth imagine and actualize new futures for themselves, the whole system needs to prioritize providing education funds, resources, and committed teachers and staff who believe in their students.

As you listen (Step 1), feel free to take notes, and then take some time with the reflection questions when you’re done (Step 2). This will help you process some of the more complex topics and find the ways that they intersect with your own life experiences, work, and circle of influence. Then, choose one of the possible action items (Step 3) that feels accessible and see if you can put it into practice.

Step 1: Listen to the Episode

Step 2: Consider These Reflection Questions

1

How has this episode changed or added to your understanding of education in the juvenile justice system?

2

Think back to recent conversations you’ve had with youth. Were you acting more as a problem solver or a listener? How did or how could listening more change the interaction?

3

What encourages you to imagine a different world or different life for yourself? How might you encourage others to imagine a different world or life?

Step 3: Take an Action Step

  1. Engage with your local school board. Attend a meeting or read the meeting minutes. Learn how the school district collaborates with the juvenile justice system.

  2. Sit down with the youth in your life and listen to what their experience is like with the education system. Consider ways you can support their learning by touring a college together, visiting a museum, watching and discussing a movie about their favorite topic, or scheduling a weekend study session.

  3. Watch and share the highlight clips from the episode below:
