A Listening Guide to the Roadmap for Change Podcast, Episode 4

The long term success of youth involved in the juvenile justice system depends on professionals seeing them as whole people.

Welcome to the Episode 4 Listening Guide!

The long term success of youth involved in the juvenile justice system depends on professionals seeing them as whole people, with families and goals and complicated circumstances. In this episode of the Roadmap for Change podcast, mental health experts, social workers, and other juvenile justice professionals describe the tools they need to use to make that possible.

As you listen (Step 1), feel free to take notes, and then take some time with the reflection questions when you’re done (Step 2). This will help you process some of the more complex topics and find the ways that they intersect with your own life experiences, work, and circle of influence. Then, choose one of the possible action items (Step 3) that feels accessible and see if you can put it into practice.

Step 1: Listen to the Episode

Step 2: Consider These Reflection Questions

1

What are ways you try to make your support and care for the youth in your life more personal?

2

What are things that people can do to help you trust them? And what are ways you try to help people trust you?

3

Are there times you have made assumptions about a young person based on a physical appearance or labels? How has that impacted how you respond to their behavior? How do you think this makes them feel?

Step 3: Take an Action Step

  1. Imagine a specific youth in your life, and then imagine that youth is going through something related to their identity that they have or have not told you about. Would that youth feel seen and supported by you?

  2. Was there something in this episode you didn’t recognize? Or a tool or practice that would be super useful for your work? Dive into one of the provided resources and seek out a trusted expert for more information or support.

  3. With a friend or collaborator, share some small victories you’ve achieved in your work or personal life understanding a youth or helping a youth feel more seen or comfortable in themselves.
